Paralympic skier Jeroen Kampschreur has claimed the Netherlands’ first gold medal in Milan in the Super-G sit-ski.
The 26-year-old finished 0.72 seconds ahead of Norwegian Jesper Pedersen, who beat him to the gold medal in the super-combined discipline four years ago.
It was the second Paralympic triumph of Kampschreur’s career, eight years after he won the super-combined in Pyeongchang.
Earlier in the week he fell in the downhill race, but he told NOS he would not be deterred from starting the Super-G. “I‘ve got medicine, my back doesn’t feel 100% but I was determined to get a medal,” he said.
“When I finished I knew I had a medal. It was totally sick.”
Only one competitor followed Kampschreur down the hill: team-mate Niels de Langen, but his time was only good enough for fifth place.
“It was very technical, but I made a few big mistakes and ended up in the soft piste,” said De Langen, who earlier won silver in the downhill.
