Musk draws global attention to Marken teen’s death

The relatives of a 14-year-old girl who was killed by a car near the former island of Marken in 2020 have been hit by international press attention following a social media post by Elon Musk.

“The relatives have noticed that Tamar’s case is getting international attention and that her story is affecting many,” the family’s lawyer Sébas Diekstra said on social media on Tuesday.

Musk drew attention to the case by re-posting a far-right X user’s comment on Tamar’s death. “Just like Henry Nowak in Southampton – an innocent young person dies, authorities seem more focused on protecting a narrative and avoiding ‘political incorrectness’ than on delivering swift justice,” the poster said.

“Suicidal empathy becoming homicidal empathy,” said Musk in his post, which by Tuesday afternoon had been seen nearly 16 million times.

Nowak, 18, was stabbed to death in Southampton in December 2025. Police initially treated him as the aggressor, handcuffing him as he lay dying, after his killer claimed Nowak had racially abused him.

The killer, Vickrum Digwa (23), was convicted of murder in May 2026 and jailed for life. The judge rejected the racial-abuse claim as fabricated.

The case has been used by far-right figures in Britain, among them Nigel Farage and Tommy Robinson, who allege “two-tier” policing biased against white victims. It has also prompted violent demonstrations.

Tamar was found dead on the side of the road of the Zeedijk connecting Marken where she lived to Monnickendam in July 2020.

The driver of the car was first said to be German but it transpired much later that he was an Iraqi national with German residency. He was fined €1,500 in 2021 for driving without due care and attention after saying he did not realise he had hit anyone.

Many questions, however, remain about her death, and some forensic experts suggest the girl’s body was moved after the crash. Her family have since then fought for a proper court hearing, and a formal case will now begin on June 30.

Diekstra said on social media that the central issue for the family is “clarity about what happened to Tamar, answers to the questions which remain open and justice for her death”.

They value the attention to Tamar and her case, he said. “They hope that the attention will ultimately contribute to answers to their questions and justice for her.”
