The public health agency RIVM has issued a smog warning for central and southern areas of the Netherlands for the next two days as temperatures climb and the wind drops.
The risk of smog is highest on Wednesday in Flevoland, Utrecht and central and western parts of Noord-Brabant. On Thursday the warning covers a larger area south of a line stretching from Leiden to Apeldoorn.
Strong sunlight and a lack of wind lead to a build-up of ozone in the atmosphere, which degrades air quality and can cause problems for people with lung conditions and other health problems.
Latest weather forecasts indicate temperatures will continue to climb for the next four days, potentially reaching 39 degrees in some parts of the south by Friday.
The meteorological office KNMI has issued code orange warnings for Wednesday and Thursday for all provinces apart from Drenthe, Groningen and Friesland, which are code yellow.
The RIVM advises people who are susceptible to smog, such as children, the elderly and asthma sufferers, to stay indoors, especially in the late afternoon and early evening.
Up-to-date air quality readings can be found online at luchtmeetnet.nl and on Teletext page 711.
