Two people have been arrested for allegedly spraying graffiti on houses and cars during violent protests against plans to house asylum seekers in a Noord-Brabant village.

The 52-year-old man and 18-year-old woman were arrested at a house in Engelen, near ’s-Hertogenbosch, during a police raid on Saturday night.

Slogans such as “AZC nee” (no asylum seekers’ centre) and obscene insults were sprayed on the property of people accused of supporting plans by the local council to house 50 teenage refugees in the village’s former police station.

The site has been attack with an explosive device and been the focus of protests and stand-offs with police for several weeks. Anti-asylum protesters also blockaded the nearby A59 motorway.

The pair were arrested after 13 villagers filed official complaints and camera footage from the area was handed in. Police have not ruled out further arrests.

An area around the house in De Bloemendaal was cordoned off and police searched the premises using sniffer dogs, Omroep Brabant reported.

An investigation is also under way into the theft of a car from outside a house where a poster for the refugee agency Vluchtelingenwerk was displayed in the window. The vehicle was found dumped in a canal 500 metres away.

Local mayor Jack Mikkers said: “We cannot live in a country in which intimidation and violence are brought to bear on a decision. We expect further arrests to follow.”
