Chemicals company Dow is cutting 600 jobs in the Netherlands as part of a global reorganisation, local newspaper PZC reported on Wednesday.

The company said in January it was cutting 4,500 out of 35,000 jobs worldwide but at the time it was unclear how many jobs would go at the company’s Dutch operations in Terneuzen, Delfzijl and Dordrecht.

The Terneuzen plant, which some 3,200 staff, is one of the biggest employers in Zeeland.

As yet, the company has not said where the Dutch job cuts will be made and union officials told the paper they had not yet been briefed on the changes.

Dow Benelux president Tabita Verburg told the Financieele Dagblad in a statement that the European chemicals industry is facing challenging times, given the high energy costs and what she described as complex and slow regulatory processes.

Last year two American chemicals companies said they were closing factories at Rotterdam port, citing high energy prices and high production costs.
