Most young people leaving home in the Netherlands head to Amsterdam, according to new figures from national statistics office CBS.
More than 174,000 people aged 18 to 30 moved out of their parents’ home in 2024, and a third of them settled in Amsterdam, one of ten councils tracked by the research. The city drew 12,760, well ahead of Rotterdam and Groningen.
The city was also the most popular destination for students, attracting 5,475, followed by Utrecht and Groningen. Nijmegen had the highest share of students
among young newcomers at 53.1%, followed by Utrecht and Leiden at 49.5% each.
The Hague was the exception: 65.4% of the young people who moved there were not students.
Just under a third of those leaving home were students, and half of them (49.9%) moved into privately rented housing. The rest went into social housing or owner-occupied homes. Non-students were most likely to move into an owner-occupied home (42.6%).
The figures only cover young people registered as living with their parents in the Netherlands at the start of 2024. They exclude anyone who moved to the country from abroad that year, such as newly arrived international students.
